For our 2019 Spring meeting, Stephen Russell spoke to us on the theme of “Living Truths from a Dead Law,” discussing ways in which the writings of the Old Testament deliver vital truths and instruction to make the New Testament richer, giving us a deeper understanding of God and His will for our lives today.

Bro. Russell is evangelist at the Pepper Road church of Christ in Athens, AL. You can hear more of his lessons by visiting the Pepper Road church of Christ website Media/Sermons page here..

Why Teach the Old Testament?

In many cases, Christians spend very little time studying the Old Testament, viewing it as an old covenant no longer in force, and holding little value in learning how to live in Christ under the law of grace. But to dismiss the contents of the Old Testament is to dismiss divinely inspired teachings delivered to God’s people, who were saved by the grace of God through faith just as we are today! In studying the characters, accounts, laws, and prophecies contained in the books of the Old Covenant, we build a stronger foundation for understanding the new.

The Law of Offerings

The books of the law are filled with requirements, rituals, and instructions on how the priesthood of Israel was to administer its work in offering sacrifices and observing various feast days. As we study these laws, we began to see a bigger picture develop of how God used the law to mold His people into a character that would revere Him, and hold a better appreciation for the cost of sin and their need for a redeemer.
